Rural and picturesque, Franklin Township is home to around 63,000 residents and encompasses 24 square miles of land. This scenic area is punctuated by two mountain ranges—Pohatcong and Scotts—and is intersected by the Musconetcong and Pohatcong Rivers, each offering unique outdoor recreational opportunities.

Centrally located in the Raritan Valley region, Franklin Township is a short commute to New York City. This fast-growing suburb has a diverse population and homes on large lots. In 2008, Money Magazine listed Franklin Township among America’s Top 100 Best Places to Live.

People & Lifestyle

There’s a strong sense of community in Franklin Township, and the area attracts many families and young professionals from diverse backgrounds. Many retirees also live here—Canal Walk, the largest active adult (55+) community in New Jersey, is located here.  

Dining, Shopping & Entertainment

Outdoor recreation is a major draw in Franklin Township. Local attractions include Colonial Park, a 685-acre park that has gardens, a dog park, nature trails, and playgrounds. Six Mile Run, a 3,037-acre tract of state land that is part of D&R Canal State Park, offers pleasant walking trails through forests, along streams, and across old farm fields.

Stagehouse Tavern, an eatery serving rustic American fare and occasional live music, is one of the area’s most popular restaurants.

Things to Do

Several annual events keep Franklin Township residents busy. The Tour de Franklin Bike Ride is the Franklin Food Bank’s largest annual fundraising event, drawing up to 800 participants and 100 volunteers together to fight local hunger. 

The St. Matthias Carnival is a five-day fair hosted on the church grounds on JFK Blvd in Somerset. This family-focused event includes carnival rides, food, and games. The Franklin Food Truck Festival, which benefits Franklin High School, features a dozen different food trucks as well as live music and vendors.

The NJ Convention and Expo Center is also located in Franklin Township, offering show promoters a 135,000-square-foot venue to showcase their event. Over 100 events are hosted here every year.
